The objective of the Better Breathing project, which delivers COPD services in a new way, is to validate the business case for eCare, eRehabilitation, ePatient Community and eLearning in four European countries. The final goal in the full deployment phase is the opportunity for service providers to enter the European market place. Therefore included in the business plan is a data collection which will focus on the barriers of implementing the Better Breathing services in other European countries.

With a rising number of aged citizens in Europe, the cost and demands for their treatment and care will increase dramatically over the coming years. To reduce the length of hospital stays, medical expenditure, and to alleviate the consequences of shortage of medical experts in Europe, the Better Breathing project will in the project create transnational communication and co-operation in order to create sustainable services for the continuous care of chronic patients in Europe.

There are four central objectives of Better Breathing:

  • To optimise the care of chronic patients both in hospitals and at home and to foster professional collaboration and capacity building across borders by utilizing user-friendly ICT tools developed in a transnational network. To meet these objectives Better Breathing will create a model for ICT by eCare, eRehabilitation, ePatient Community and eLearning.
  • To have the developed Better Breathing model adapted by healthcare systems in othe parts of Europe, which implies that a business model will be created along with a mode for integrating the tools as part of regional and national IT strategies and have them perceived as an important tool for improving care and reducing cost by the relevant authorities.
  • To have the Better Breathing model integrated in the national health strategies and implemented into daily practice in local healthcare organisations, which will provide an equal access to the best possible care for citizens in Europe.
  • To secure the sustainability of the model. It is a crucial objective that the developed model is accepted in the clinical world, which implies that the model becomes part of the recommendations for evidence-based treatment published by clinical societies.
